What do you do an learn in? I'm planning on going to a community college for it. But do we ever shadow when we are in the class? I want to know if I could handle situations I may come by in this career. Like will I ever be able to sit in an ambulance and observe?

Ok, here are a few things for starters. There are many different levels of EMT’s. A “paramedic” is an EMT, but an EMT isn’t always a paramedic. EMT- Basics have teh minimum level of training required by the U.S. D.O.T. to function as an ambulance crew member. Their schooling is probably what you are looking at, and will take approximately 140 hours to accomplish. During that time you will probably ride- along with an ambulance or spend a few hours working in an emergency room.
A “paramedic” (EMT- Paramedic) is an EMT who has undergone at least a year of schooling. They have studied a great deal more about the body and are able to give many more medications. They alsohave the training to perform many more procedures than an EMT Basic.
After you complete paramedic training, you will have the opportunity to complete a mandatory field internship. Basically, you ride along with the ambulance crew, and gradually perform more and more of the work, until you are caring for the patient by yourself. They won’t let you complete your internship until they feel you are competent to practice by yourself.
In paramedic class, there’s a lot of bookwork, but also a lot of chances to practice the skills that you learn. You won’t be allowed to graduate until you are competent in all the required skills, so you don’t have to worry about being thrown in an ambulance unprepared.
Hope this helps!
